OSU Panel Discussion
Dr. Urszula Iwaniec: Breast cancer metastasis to bone occurs in the majority of patients with advanced disease and results in severe bone pain and fractures. Also, bone may act as a reservoir of cancer cells that ultimately invade other organs. Our laboratory is attempting to identify the factors responsible for this metastasis to bone. The ultimate goal of our research is prevent bone metastasis and, if it does occur, prevent its spread to other organs.

Dr. Kerri Winters-Stone studies the effects of breast cancer treatment on health and well-being, and how exercise may be able to reduce the long-term side effects and symptoms while improving quality of life. Her current work focuses on strength training as an effective strategy to reduce fracture risk, prevent falls and optimize physical function in both breast and prostate cancer survivors. Dr. Stone will give an overview of her latest research where patients and family members exercise as a “team”.

Dr. Emily Ho will talk about recent research being done at OSU investigating dietary influences on breast cancer prevention, including the use of phytochemicals derived from broccoli and other vegetables.

Bone Health, Weight Gain & Exercise
Treatment for breast cancer can cause unhealthy weight gain and bone loss that may put survivors at risk of cancer recurrence and developing chronic diseases other than cancer. Exercise can simultaneously reduce fat, restore muscle and build bone. Recent studies indicate that these same effects may be particularly beneficial for breast cancer survivors. Dr. Kerri Winters-Stone is an exercise physiologist and oncology researcher who conducts research on exercise and body composition in breast cancer survivors. She will summarize the most recent findings on this topic and outline the simple steps breast cancer survivors can take to keep them strong and healthy after treatment.
